Growing the tech sector
2 Comments · Posted by Your Wellington team in Business
Older Wellingtonians will remember when there were many head offices in the capital. Now many are in Auckland. However, filling the void are high-tech businesses, spurred in part by the growth of the film industry, and by the internet.
It’s a good thing to have this growth sector in the capital, but can we do more to help them, especially entrepreneurs who want to set up business here? Is this something the city should be involved in actively assisting, especially as it’s ultimately beneficial to have a vibrant business community—real and virtual?

Improve the broadband infrastucture. Based on 2006 census study, internet broadband penetration is 70%. This is a far cry from cities like SF, Singapore and Tokyo which have higher penetration of broadband internet usage (close to 100% penetration). Added to that we need to introduce some business incentives to the business like public infrastructure improvement (build the tech park in Kilbirnie to focus on being the creative multimedia ICT hub). Also, we can have the connection with SF or Seattle for sister city connection to add credence to the business community.
Let’s not forget the public transportation system as well by having less cars on the roads as much as possible.
This is a key message for the mayoral vote…i think.

There was a desire in the 1990s for Wellington to be the first to hit 50 per cent. Maybe we made it, then we lost sight of a 100 per cent goal. Wellington should be far quicker to jump on the government’s broadband plans, and we seem to be hampered by certain interests there. This is one area that perhaps needs to be opened up—with a close eye on the benefits to the citizens of Wellington—so that we can get closer to that 100 per cent mark. As I said in another comment, it all ties together!
