The green bins’ issue

Earlier this year, Wellington City Council was proposing to get rid of the green recycling bins, due to a shortfall in the budget, and replace them with plastic bags. Public outcry and a petition ensured the status quo, and the Council has been forced to look for ways to save money elsewhere.
It seems a no-brainer to continue the recycling programme rather than use more resources to make plastic bags, or sting Wellingtonians with an extra c. $60 per annum.
We’d be interested in your comments, and if there are more things we can do with our recycling to become even more environmentally responsible.

Wellington needs street bins for recycling. In Majorca they have fantastic garbage recepticles – colour dcoded for lass/plastic/aper/card etc, with another ‘crusher’ bin for compost type waste. Fabulous!

The recycling bins initiative by WCC is one of the most inept I have ever encountered. Recycling – a great idea. Open bins for plastic and paper for collection by WCC in one of the windiest environments you can think of? The effect is the redistribution of recyclable waste randomly across the landscape of the city – or more likely into the harbour and ocean. Nice one WCC. Jack, I hope your council will have a little more foresight than the genius who devised this scheme (And how long has this programme been running? Like, has nobody ever thought about this seriously?). I have a suggestion – what about a specially coloured wheelie bin. These will prevent most random weather caused redistribution, are probably easier to collect, and the bin itself is less likely to be blown down the street and in many circumstances lost. Too easy.
